The dark triad is a set of three personality traits that are considered to be socially undesirable. These traits are:

narcissism

psychopathy

Narcissism
Narcissism is characterized by an:

inflated sense of one's own importance

a deep need for admiration

and

a lack of empathy for others. 

Psychopathy
Psychopathy is characterized by

impulsivity

selfishness

and
remorselessness.

Machiavellianism
Machiavellianism is characterized by

manipulation

 and exploitation
 of others without guilt or remorse.

The
dark triad can be used to control people in many ways such as through

charm

gaslighting

intimidation

isolation


 and/or manipulation.

Those are just a few of the coercive tactics used by a dark triad personality shall we discuss more

Machiavellianism and psychopathy  deficits in empathy & theory of mind (Ali et al., 2009; Ali and Chamorro-Premuzic, 2010; Vonk et al., 2015)
